Layers pellets.

New member but had hens for 8 years, only rescues before but now good quality hens.
I have 6 girls, 2 white suffolks,2 brown comercials,2 black maroons. Great layers, very happy together.
They are like having more children though i am a grandmother now. Such lovely little people. I feed organic fermented groats and layers pellets and live in a woodland so plenty of forage though in flockdown at the moment so i bring the woodlands to them.
I dont want to use layets pellets anymore as it is not natural, i dont want to use soya or wheat or corn. Happy to grow mealworms etc etc instead. Anyone have experience in living without layers pellets please.

Perris , so glad i looked and found you. I have been reading all your information avidly. Now determined to change.
Are you in the UK ? I live near Hereford and buy scottish oats from small scottish farmers, £42 for 25kgs organic inc postage. Happy to pay it but would like more local ( and cheaper). I still produce organic eggs for half what i used to buy them for.
During the summer i dry nettles, chickweed, hairy bittetcress, dock, small leaved lime leaves, grape vine leaves, chard/ cabbage and add to their feed during winter months. Will now add parsley and other herbs. So much information from you and others so i am confident that it will be succesful.

If you have the time and money, you can feed other than commercial. You just need to be sure to fully meet their dietary needs. @Perris is one of the most educated members of BYC to learn from regarding alternate chicken feeding. Good luck.
