Laying an egg more frequently than once a day?

We have a flock of five of different breeds raised this past spring. Only one is laying and has been for two weeks. One other seems very close to starting and the others seem a little behind her. For the one that is laying I'm wondering:

Can the egg production/laying cycle be shorter than 24 hours?

The first time she laid it was around 2PM. Each day it was about one hour earlier. For the past three days (just after her first laying at dawn) we've found one egg under the roost bar where she was sleeping. For the two weeks prior to this she has used the nest boxes perfectly.

"They" say chickens don't lay in their sleep. "They" also say the egg cycle is longer than 24 hours.

Could either, or both of these ideas be wrong? I guess we'll know in another nine or so days if she goes back to laying in the nest boxes before bed :)

I've found over time :old that very little is absolute truth when dealing with animals. There are general rules that most adhere to, but sometimes there are exceptions. When someone makes absolute statements about living creatures, I just shake my head.

Could be, they say all bets are off with new layers til their systems get worked out, but could it be possible it's someone else?
I thought I had one that laid twice in one day just a few weeks ago but after comparing them in indoor lighting later I could see a difference.

Yep, the average chicken laying cycle is 27 hours, but there can definitely be some variations and exceptions. You should be happy to have lots of chicken eggs!

We are very happy! They are the best eggs I've ever had! Thank you, Charley! ;) Now if only the other girls would start to follow suit... but preferably making use of the nest boxes...

That's was our gut feeling as well: that it takes time for their systems "settle."

Charley is the only layer right now. But we keep a very close eye on all of them. I'm hoping the second one starts laying today! I need to head out and check the nest boxes as she was hanging out in the coop while we cooked and ate breakfast. Fingers crossed!

Probably a "Production red". Its a cross between a new hampshire red and a rhode island red bred for its short egg production time. I was told it was a local thing here and that one guy bred them that way but I guess others could have stumbled upon it. I get 2 a day from my girl and more than once a week we get 1 double yolker. Down side is they never seem to go broody... I like having chickas

These are from a regional hatchery that specializes in dual-purpose, heritage breeds. Our layer is a barred Plymouth rock, though. We do have two RIRs, but they have not laid yet.
