I have 2 nesting boxes but I can not get 2 hens to lay side by side at the same time. I have one who can not handle any of the others being anywhere near when she is ready to lay. Before and after laying she gets loud and bossy if any of the others approach. Is this normal?

Yes that is normal. I have an EE that anytime someone goes in the nesting boxes she starts going off "bock bock BOCK...bock bock BOCK" no matter what she is doing. I have 7 nesting boxes and 7 hens and the three that are laying like to lay in this one box. SO you can always hear them squacking over who gets it first.

My larger BA is the queen on the coop so she always gets it first.

Chickens are funny creatures... I have 16 nest boxes, but I'll find two hens in the same nest box at the same time, even though there are plenty of open spaces. Or 8 eggs in one nest and nothing in the adjoining ones. No accounting for taste!

Good to know. I am down to 4 but plan to get 4 more in spring. Some days they all lay on one side some days they split it up. It is my EEs that always make the biggest fuss.
