Ok, this is like so dumb... but do my chickens lay eggs at a certain time of day? I notice that I feed them in the morning usually about 8am, its summer so I sleep in..

and there are no eggs, I can go out around 10am no eggs, then I got back at 1130 or noon and I might have an egg.

Do they lay at certain times of the day...or will they also start laying during the eveing hours? Sorry...but Im soooooo Scared of the "s" word...i cant even say it...and I fear I might find one when I go out one day...I would just about die~~~~~I know they eat eggs and can lay in there coop area. Im talking HUGE, BIG FEARS I wont see books, magazines, movies, NOTHING with them and even my family wont say the word...just the letter "s".

So I try to not keep the eggs in the coop long.

Are you saying you are only finding one egg per day? You don't say how many pullets/hens you have or if they are all at laying age. So it's hard to say how many eggs you should be expecting each day. Do they free range?

My hens lay all hours during the day, and I've even found one or two under the roosts that were layed at night. Mine lay the majority of eggs between about 9AM and 2PM - but I've found them laying as early as 5AM and as late as 7PM.

I would thing the quickest and easiest way to figure out if you have an S getting the eggs is to go out there every half hour or so during the day and check to see if there are any eggs - especially go out immediately after hearing the egg laying song.

It takes a hen roughly 25 hours to produce an egg, so it's possible that you will find them at different times of the day.
My girls start out early in the day and then it progresses to later and later in the day until they start all over again in the morning.
P.S. The S's that come looking for eggs are usually ones like black Ss and rat Ss and they are more afraid of you then you are of them.

I've seen one juvenile black S around my coop. He saw me and hauled boogie out of there.

If the S word scares you, whatever you do... DON'T go into the "pests and predators" section!

omg! somebody said the word,...and it gave me chills just seeing the word. Im sorry that is how afraid I am of them.

and you can bet im staying out of that forum you said, thanks for the info. on that...I would just about die....

If you lived where I live (Pacific NW), you wouldn't have to worry AT ALL about the dreaded 'S'...doesn't get warm enough here.. I'll see tiny little Garter's slithering about once every year or two, but that's it... My hens would kill a Garter if they saw one in the backyard, lol.
