I was wondering if laying eggs are like using the bathroom, do they have to happen?? Can the hen decides when she wants to lay an egg? Do they have to lay an eggs every so often??

Eggs are laid from the vent or cloaca this is the same place they used the bathroom from

I do not know if eggs can be 'held'.

Eggs are laid about every 30ish hours depending on breed.

...

I hope this helps.

I recently boxed up about 12 layers to sell and one of them was on the nest so we left her for last. I waited and waited and she never laid her egg so I boxed her up. When the box was opened an hour later she had laid her egg in the box.

And that s all I have to say about that.

IMO it is like going to the bathroom. When ya gotta lay ya gotta lay.

Hope this helps.

When the egg is ready to lay, she will lay it. However, a hen can be in optimal health and not lay eggs. In fact, they often temporarily stop laying, for days or weeks, when stressed even minimally.
