laying eggs

I have had chickens for 1 1/2 years and just now got a coop built. They have been free range and roosting in a tree, then laying eggs where ever, mostly in the barn. Right now I let them out if I come home for lunch or the kids do after school. If I would open their door when I leave at 7 or 7:30 would they still lay in the boxes or will they start laying back in the barn?
