Laying habits of the Jersey Black Giant

How would you rate the JBG as a layer? How many eggs per week. Thank you, Lonnie

mine started laying about a month ago. getting an egg every other day. they are smaller than my barred rock and rhode island red eggs but darker. im sure they will get bigger in time.

They were on of my best layers with big eggs. 4 /5 eggs a week But like with everything no 2 chickens are the same. Even if they are the same breed doesn't mean they will all lay the same. You have to be lucky too.

It took my jersey a while to get up and running but once she did she lays daily for me. She has eggs smaller than my buff orpingtons and much darker often with speckles. Shes an exceptionally sweet bird as well.

I've had JGs from three different hatcheries and I'd say they average about four, sometimes five a week. Not quite as good as a decent Barred Rock or Rhode Island Red, but better than many breeds and varieties that were never bred for anything more than show. The ones I got from Sandhill grew to a nice size. The birds from the other hatcheries (no small breeders) were disappointing in size. Hens and roosters are rather laid back. I've come to like them even if they're not as good as some.
