Laying Hen on Antibiotics

I’d take some pre and probiotics just in case the antibiotics upset your gut flora and that’s why you’re having stomach upset.

Also have you eaten duck eggs before? Some have a allergy to duck eggs, and it can cause stomach upset.
On it! 👍
Yes, but only since my two girls started laying this summer, so just a few months.

I give her half a tablet twice a day for 14 days. Given that this is for bumblefoot, which I understand could ultimately kill her, I am comfortable with giving her the antibiotics. I didn’t have much luck with my search on FARAD though. I will follow the advice and toss her eggs until about New Years - that seems so far away, and throwing out the eggs I have gathered this week was heartbreaking. I couldn’t reliably tell them apart, so my other layer is penned with my two month old ducklings tonight. I suppose she can teach them how to lay soon. Ha!

I would suspect it should be a negligible amount of stomach ache.. I mean especially not even as much as it would cause if you had taken it yourself. And then how active or effective is it after being heated by the stove and not ingested raw?? Which drug were you using? Sounds to me like you were given a "safe" answer, according to the "LAW".

Egg residue FARAD

Actually some drugs including many antibiotics have been tested and evaluated as well, Check out this really cool article/resource I found..

A fantastic lesson for us ALL, including the vet. If you haven't already shared with them please do! :highfive:

This isn’t the worst stomach ache I have ever had, but I would compare it to the general feeling and location of my dairy stomach aches, if I were to drink a glass of milk for example. Although that would be substantially worse. It has been long time since I took an antibiotic without taking pro/prebiotics, so it is hard to compare. But I remember the dairy stomach more clearly than labor pains. 😂

At this point, it could be the ducks eggs or the antibiotics. I will take some time off and reintroduce after a break. Seems like a great time for some fasting 👍🏻

Wow - thanks Eggcessive! Quite the study! Certainly points to the duck eggs as the source of my tummy aches. I think the mind can also contribute a lot. 😉

Amoxi-clav (amoxicillin clavulanate) is generic Augmentin, an antibiotic people take. Might be slightly different concentrations, but shouldn’t be by too much. As someone said, shouldn’t be a problem unless someone is sensitive to it or concerns about resistance.

Can’t believe I never updates this thread (just digging through old threads to find another one). I had an extensive food allergy panel shortly after this thread. I am allergic to eggs. Go figure.
