A couple of my hens have started laying their eggs on the ground instead of the nest boxes. What could be the problem? There is mosquitoes in their house and I've wondered if it could be hot?

Are they new to laying? Sometimes, birds new to laying, such as young pullets, will lay their eggs in a wrong place. Do you have any fake eggs/golf balls in the nest boxes? These can sometimes entice them into laying in the nest boxes.

It may be because they are hot, but my hens almost always lay in their nest boxes, even when it is hot.

I agree.

They have been laying for about a year. I tried making them a couple of nest outside the house but they just scratch out the hay.
