Isle of wight England
Hi i am new at looking after chickens and ducks, do chickens lay in the winter and do i need any lights on in there coop.
i live on the isle of wight on south coast of England, it does get cold but not much below -3 in winter. they have plenty of straw for now do i need to do any thing El's

Some chickens will lay through winter without you needing to add a light, but as a rule hens need about 14 hours light a day to keep them in production. The light stimulates their ovaries and keeps them laying. Keeping them laying all year round can shorten their laying lifespan though. Hens have a certain number of egg cells and when that's used up they're done.

x2 sumi,

You can add a light inside the coop attached to a timer to come on early in the am to make up the 14-16 hours light needed if you notice a drop in egg production.
