I currently have 3 ISA Brown's, and 2 Barred Rocks. My ISA's are laying fine and my barred just started laying, small but laying. Two questions...First- since building a new coop it seems the hens are laying in the coop floor or in yard. How do I fix this? Or will they figure it out on their own? Second question is one of the ISA's eggs has been lighter the past few days. Is there a reason for this? The others are a darker color. Just curious. And glad my Barred Rocks are laying!!

Keep them out of the yard for a couple days. Make them discover the nest boxes. Though, ours will still lay in the yard when they go back out. Is yours a completely new flock? Chickens seem to have an attitude of "well she did it.... ". That's why if you give them 5 nest boxes, they will all lay in one or two, go broody together, etc. If there are already hens from an older flock laying in the boxes, that really helps.

But sometimes, nothing helps.
