Hi all,

Since string is a concern, what about nesting pads?it seems like many are made of carboard/paper from aspen trees but the strands feel so tough I was concerned. Thanks for any input!

String is a problem because it is long and tangly.
For the nesting pads, as long as any pieces that break off are relatively short, then it should not be an issue. Relatively short, as in not long enough to tie into a knot. If the material is somewhat brittle, it will tend to break off pieces that are short enough to be fine.

Chickens may not be all that smart, and they certainly will try eating lots of odd things, but they usually are fairly good at figuring out what is safe to eat and what is not. So yes, you should avoid leaving pieces of string laying around, but I wouldn't expect the nesting pads to be a problem.
