I recently got my first flock on August 31st. We have 16 chickens ranging from 2 years to 9 weeks old. We got eggs right away!

Unfortunatley one of our hens ( we arent sure exactly which one but we know it is a 2 year old orpington) instead of laying in our nesting boxes she is laying in her own nest that she made under the coop. We have put some hay down there so instead of the poop sinking into the ground and making it smell bad, it would just lie on top so we could rake it out. In our nesting boxes we have pine shavings and a golf ball. Not all of our other hens who were laying in their other homes are laying yet ( probably still a little traumatized from the move ) but a couple are and they are laying in the nesting boxes. Since both my parents work and i am in school none of us are home to see or hear who it is. I have read many different things about training, but i thought it would be a good idea to get answers for my situation. I am wondering if i should put hay in the boxes or anything else you suggest.Thank you so much!

I would suggest watching over the weekend. Once you know the hen- lock her up in the coop for a few days. She will have no choice but to use your nests. If you don't like that idea- I suggest you block off that area to ALL your hens. You have to stop the habit asap and you certainly don't want other hens to think that is a good nesting spot either. Good luck!
