How old are they? Chickens typically start laying around 21 weeks depending on the breed and the circumstances (time of year, health of birds). Combs turning deep red and squatting when you reach for them are good indications that eggs are on the way.

Welcome to BYC.

In addition to the physical signs of readiness, as they get ready to lay they'll probably start squatting and start exploring the nest boxes (and other promising nooks and corners too -- so put fake eggs or golf balls into the boxes where you want them to lay). They may get restless and act oddly as they are confused by their instincts or they may just surprise you with an egg. :)
