Stew is my young Cochin rooster who is 3 months old. He just started crowing sometimes, he's guarding his hens like he's supposed to but he does it laying down! (as seen in the picture). He's constantly laying down. There's nothing wrong with him physically and he's not in any pain just lazy I guess? Any ideas? Also I thought maybe because of the heat.. I'm in Texas where it's over 100 almost every day now. He has a bunch of things to keep him cool. I know he does stand in his little pool from time to time and he has watermelon and frozen bottles.
Anyway I just think it's weird... Anyone else have a rooster do that?

Have you checked his legs for any swelling, injury, etc. (bottom of feet too)?
Does he seem to walk o.k.? No wobbling, being knock kneed, he's stable when he walks?
Crop empty in the mornings?
Checked for lice/mites?

More than likely it's the 100F heat, he's found a shady spot and is trying to stay cool but it would be worth checking him out late in the evening or when he's roosting when it's slightly cooler. (No chasing chickens in 100F heat - not good for you or them:))

I'd give them all a dose of electrolytes.

I give a dose of Sav-a-Chick electrolytes/vitamins about once a week during heat waves.
It really seems to help....started this after they saved a heat stroked hen once.
Can mix up a smaller amount, just wrap the packet tight and store in a dry cool place.
Always have plain water available too.

BIG(9x14x2") chunks of ice last all day for wading, sitting, and sipping.
Much more useful to the chickens than frozen foods and treats.

Make space in your freezer!
