I walked by the run around 7 pm and noticed my Red Sex Link squatting very still, which I noted as strange. When I went to collect eggs at 8 pm I found her in the nesting box, again squatting instead of laying. There is a clear liquid coming out of her vent, looks like it might be egg white? The vent opening is normal; light pink and tightly shut. I poked at it and she startled so I stopped in case that was painful.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Red Sex Link hen, 1.5 years old, good condition

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Squatting in nesting box, with clear liquid coming from vent and running down her butt.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
First noticed 90 minutes ago. Was walking normally around 9 am, 12 hours ago.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
Nothing visible.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
Don't know. She has been a very consistent layer with no problems before this.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
She is on Modesto Mills organic layer pellets.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Unknown.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
None.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I am pretty hands off with my birds and I will cull her if she cannot recover and continue to lay regularly.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

Wooden coop with straw bedding.

Good news! I returned to check on her and she had laid a soft shelled egg! I'd heard of that happening before but had never seen it. I'll continue to keep an eye on her but hopefully it was just a fluke.

Glad to hear she is doing better:)

I agree with @sawilliams - offering oyster shell free choice is always a good idea, even if you feed layer feed.

Hopefully it is a 1 time glitch. I have a girl that does this sometimes - I do know her time is limited since she is starting show a bit of a swollen abdomen. When she is in trouble, I direct dose her with Poultry Nutri-Drench and get extra Calcium into her - I crush a TUMS and sprinkle it on egg (hard boiled or scrambled). She usually expels the egg in an hour or so. I just keep a close watch on her - for now, she eats and drinks well and is active.

Yes, thank goodness that resolved itself so quickly! XD Thank you for the extra information! I have been giving them free access to crushed egg shells. I chose that instead of oyster because it's a way to reuse the egg shells. Would oyster shells be better? (They also have free access to grit.)

Personally I would offer both.
