We you referring "I think you are headed for either a big mess or very thirsty chickens. As a matter of fact I am certain that you are." to me?
I've been using my waterers for almost 3 months now, and have experienced neither.
I just figured I'd suggest what's worked for me as the originial OP asked for waterer suggestions.

Actually the metal 'nipple' (not a true nipple but don't know what else to call it) on mine do tend to drip the water right in their mouths. With the 1L setup I suggested I've had little spillage, and what I've had is mostly my fault being clumsy putting them back in the coop after refilling.
The 2L bottles seemed to have too much water pressure for the 'nipple' to hold back. I never left one in the coop so I don't know about the air cell issue.
