Hi everyone,
I am new to Byc, I started reading material on this site because I have a twelve year old boy who has Ducks on the brain, he has wanted one or two for a pet since he was five years old and now that he is older I have started to do some homework, this site has been very helpful, I feel like I have learned a lot but just as in life the more I know, the more I realize I don't know enough, have so much more to learn!
I was delighted to read Wifezilla adventures with Duckponics, funny and delightful to read, so I have joined and am getting ready to choose my breed of duck, my son wand the Peking, "cus it's just sooo cute mom!" I on the other hand have been reading and think the Ancona's may be the better fit, now to find a breeder in my area, and get my brooder together. my husband is fine with it and has agreed to build onto the old tree house to provide our new family members with a proper home out in the back yard, we will have some work ahead of us, but I am a lucky girl, my better half is very handy with a hammer and nails and he works fast!
I would appreciate any information regarding best pet breeds that anyone has and suggestions are always helpful,
I look forward to new posts and with the good lord willing I will be posting our story as it unfolds very soon,
I live in Florida in a quiet subdivision, my yard is fenced in back but I want ducks that are fairly quiet and more prone to stay close to home, I have a small dog, Cody, but I do not worry about him with the ducks, however there are several neighborhood cats that come and go and I know there has been a raccoon jumping my back fence on his nightly rounds so these are my conditions, again thanks to all who post, I have been reading for hours every day for weeks now and feel like we can handle this new adventure, it's silly but I am excited and a little scared at the same time!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I don't keep ducks but if you drop by the duck section of the forum I'm sure the experts over there will be able to help you with all your duck questions. Here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks

Wishing you and your family the best of luck with your new duck adventure. I'm sure your son will be so excited when you get them. I think keeping animals is a great way of getting kids involved with nature and learning how to care for them. Plus they get plenty of fresh air while doing so!!

Enjoy BYC :frow

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Definitely stop by our Ducks section. I don't know a thing about Ducks other than how cute they are. LOL

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

I'm glad you joined us.

I don't keep ducks, either, so may not be of much help. I'd definitely post in the Ducks section for answers to any duck-related questions.

Good luck with your future ducks!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Someone in the predator thread may be able to give you tips on making your backyard less appealing to raccoons. Maybe a nice electrified gate, to persuade him to climb some where else.
