Hi I'm new here. Two friends recommended joining this forum and I am glad I did. I live in the Northeastern part of the U.S. and am searching for breeds that will do well in the winter and are good with kids. My husband and I are going to build our coop this fall so any bluidung plans, blue prints, or advice is greatly appreciated! We plan on purchasing chicks in the spring around 5 or 6. We are going to train our Lab to help protect them.

Glad I'm here! Can't wait to learn more!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. With children involved, I would recommend going with one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, and Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list and Cochins are the poorest layers (although they are the best brooders and mothers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built.

I agree with Michael. As for building plans, check out the coops section for many designs, and I believe some plans are available.
