learning to free range :) PICS

A hawk just killed one of my pet ducks and now I'm afraid to let them free range unless I'm sitting in the yard with them. I loved watching them forage around the yard. It was so peaceful

Sorry to hear about the loss. That is a concern of mine too. I have not seen any large birds of prey yet (knock on wood) though last week I was outside and saw a large shadow flying overhead. I looked up to see 3 canadian geese.

We do have alot of crows in the area, I have heard that they will keep hawks away. I do see vultures often but with the amount of time that I have been outside, I am surprised that I have not seen any hawks.

I will probably build them a shade shelter there. That way they will have some cover if they notice something.

I really wanted to wait to let them range until they were laying and someone was broody or had hatched out some babies just in case of losses but I felt bad that they didn't have access to all that they could. There run is about 50'X50' so they have room but I wanted them to have more.
