I've done a lot of research, found a few sources online, and heard the general response of 'don't even try to do it or you'll kill them.' I want to know how to get in contact with the apparently rare and illusive vent sexers that go to the hatcheries and are artists in their own right. I don't know where to start though. I'm sure if I emailed a hatchery they would be against the idea. To me it seems like the only way to learn is to apprentice at the hatchery for three years then be stuck there for another 10 working as a vent sexer. I want to learn on my own time, and would be willing to pay. Can any one help me?

I really don't think it is as hard as people make it out, and you won't kill them trying. I get the basic idea of what to look for at this point, but am not really sure on my accuracy rate yet. I would start by looking for pictures of what a male and female look like. Then start practicing. I plan on getting some barred rock hens and a RIR rooster to make some sex link chicks and them sexing them to see how well I do. Then I can tell if they are indeed the sex that I thought.

I've heard there are 20 or so different shapes to look for, and four of those shapes are almost identical in either gender. I've looked for a more comprehensive set of photos, but haven't found them. What are you basing your guesses on?

If you have the time and resources... maybe order/hatch Red and/or Black Sex Links. Practice vent sexing, even taking photos for reference, on both the males and the females. That way, you are certain of the gender while learning what you are looking at.

That's a good idea. I could always sell them after. And any photos I take I could share
