Leave it or hardware cloth?

I'm pulling the soffit board off to make ventilation better. Can I get away without hardware cloth on it or should I put it on? The opening is about 6 feet from the ground. It's 3½ inches wide by 12ft long

I just had to cover a similar setup with hardware cloth because I found some eggs missing and discovered a sizeable snake hiding in the coop. I underestimated their climbing ability....

Rats, mice, weasels, birds, and snakes can get through there. Definitely cover it.
