Leaving an Azalea bush for shade - would I know this is a problem right away?

Totally forgot to think through this - we have a landscaper here digging up some old roots and leveling a garden area. Our pullets like an Azalea bush for shade, sometimes "try" it but never take an actual bite off. It's been several weeks of them congregating underneath. Eventually we probably want to get rid of it, but trying to decide if the landscapers should clear it now to put in a better bush. Do you usually know if your birds will tempt their fate immediately with a plant?
