LEAVING CHICKS ALONE FOR A WEEKEND???

Well, hopefully they'll answer soon, so if horsesitter can't take care of the girls, Fetch can.

They listed a ph# too, so I guess I could call

Thanks so much for the Pet Sitters website. I found someone who only lives a few blocks away and even though she has never cared for chickens she is willing to try. She's going to come over and check it all out and I'll show her the ropes. If this works out which I think it will I will not only have a great resource but a new neighbor! And she doesn't think 6 am is early!!!

Mine were good about returning calls/emails, but it depends on the person running it.

Eggcelent! Glad it worked out for you. I first heard of PSI through BirdTalk magazine...so glad I followed through and looked it up.

well, hey. I'm in austin. I've pet-sitted for all sorts of creatures.
if anyone needs me to pet sit their birdies, they can pm me.

(I have no life, i never go anywhere:rolleyes: )

When I went away for the weekend with my 6 week olds, I just put plenty of food and water in the 5 gallon feeders/waterers and left them locked in the coop. They were fine when we got home. (7 birds in a 6x4 coop)

I've been training a neighbor's son since I got the chicks. He's been visiting the chicks, knows how the coop works, what to feed them. He's also been visiting BYC. I think he's lobbying his family for a flock of his own now, lol! When we're ready to take a vacation, he should be able to handle things for us for a few days.

I have left my birds for a few days. I had some friends collect the eggs. I left their waterers and feeders full and I put out a couple of large shallow bowls of water too.

Thanks, all, for your suggestions. I will be facing this issue in the spring, and all winter I've resisted friends' offers for me to stay over, since I wouldn't leave the coop doors open all night in 20 deg wet weather. I have two weekends I'll likely have to go to, and have been anxiously trying to figure out what to do... I appreciate hearing all the pros and cons about leaving coop doors open, etc.

I suspect I would not at all enjoy the weekends unless I knew my hens were being looked after.
