I have always kept water & food in the coop & there is no mess or rodent problems. It is there for when their light goes on in the morning or if the weather is extremely bad. The feeder is a hanging one, the water is up on a bulb crate about 8 inches above the litter, maybe a little more when the base heater is in there.
