Yes. You can do that. But first: When you candle, are you doing it in a very dark room? No windows, no LED displays, wearing your glasses, giving your eyes time to adjust? Fresh batteries in your strongest flashlight? Shining the light down through the air cell? If that doesn't work, you can get creative with a tin can, or other similar item placed over a regular light bulb. (I use a 7W CFL) Even then, some of those blue, green and very dark eggs are just about impossible to see into. Keep your nose handy when ever you open the bator: the nose knows! also, look for any eggs that may be weeping through the pores.
