Leg band for chicks?

I now have a multi-generation flock. 9 month old Rhode Island Red Hens and 8 week old chicks. I bought two boxes of 16mm plastic leg bands- blue and yellow. They fit perfectly on the 9 month old hens. But, since I'm chasing around all my hens, to get the leg bands on, I'm wondering if I should go ahead and put them on the chicks. Their legs are tiny now and the leg bands would be big. They would not slip off their feet, but they would be dangling. Would that drive the chicks nuts? Would they pick at them? Would they hurt themselves somehow? Should I wait until they are closer to full size, like right before the start laying??

They'll get used to them if you do, but could it get snagged on anything in your run? a stick? anything? that is what I'd be concerned about.
