Leg injury

Can you describe what is going on with the leg now? Have you tried splinting? Does she move her toes or stand? Legs can be amputated by a vet. It could be very dangerous for most people to attempt that at home due to risk of bone infection and bleeding. I remember an old thread on BYC where someone amputated a leg for some reason, but it would be dangerous. Many chickens lose a leg to severe frostbite and can get along okay with the handicap. One person made their banty hen some artificial legs when she lost both feet to frostbite.

Well the leg is black and cold. I think its dead. I called a vet. She and everyone says i need to kill her. I get a little choked up about it but anyhow, whats the best way for me to do her in?

before you take drastic measure if you havent already. if she feels pain it is not dead yet. a dead limb will have no feeling at all. that is for sure broken, if she will let you gently pull down and see if it can be aligned. if it goes back into place you may have a fighting chance.

cover her head with a towel and lay her on her side, this may take 2 people, keep her calm and relaxed and set the leg. use 4 pencils cut to fit between the ankle and the thigh, wrap with gauze (as padding) lightly and surround the leg with the pencils as best you can on 4 sides. you may need 5, the idea is to not put pressure on the leg, but to allow the pencils to touch while supporting the break.

it may be beneficial to apply vasaline to the leg before gauzing to ensure moisture is kept in the leg and will help regulate leg tempreature (much like thermal paste on a computer cpu or gpu)

also, mix up 5 asprin (325mg) into a gallon of water, and 1tbsp of sulpher free molasses to mask the asprin taste. try to use non coated asprin as the coating does not dissolve fully to help with any pain and inflimation there may be

if done right you should see improvement to the legs condition and warmth may return.

never give up till all options are exhausted

a vet told me this girl needed to be euthanized after she got her back torn open, i refused to give up. 3 weeks later she is mostly healed up, and her preen gland is beginning to function as it should. her feathers are even beginning to return. this is how i found her in the morning in great pain. being the stubborn person i am, i refused to give up. she will be returning to the flock in a few days

Chickens can get along with only one leg. Many people each winter will have chickens who suffer frostbite on a leg and the leg will turn black and fall off on it’s own. If her leg is black and dead, then it won’t bleed if you remove it. I would tend to let it fall off on it’s own, or have a vet remove it. Chickens do not do well with anesthesia though. If you are feeling brave, you can try to remove it yourself, but use sterile technique as closely as possible. I would recommend using betadine to clean, and dress the wound. When it heals, you might be able to fashion an artificial leg. Some have even designed wheelchairs for lame chickens, but she should be able to walk on one leg.
