My dog got into the chicken yard again 3 days ago and briefly got hold of one of the hens. She doesn't have any open wounds but won't bear weight on her right leg. She will occassipnally stand, hop on her left leg and seems to use her wing as a crutch. Idon't see any obvious break. I have her isolated in a 4x4 area in the chicken tunnel and put her in a pet carrier up on the roost with the others at night. She is eating and drinking small amounts. She won't be going to the vet. Is there anything else that I can do to help her try to recover?

Do you have any pictures of the leg? Does she hold her bad leg up to her body when she stands? Look for green bruising or swelling on the skin of her leg all the way up past the feathers to the hip. Is there any tiny cut in the skin? Look under feathers and wings for any other injuries or puncture wounds, since sometimes they can be hidden. It can take a few weeks for a sprain to heal. If anything is fractured it would be good to splint it, but don’t splint unless there is a fracture.

Thanks for the quick reply. Upon closer inspection, there is a small wound on her foot and it is slightly swollen. Her legs are greenish at baseline. Her stool is loose and yellow this morning but she looks well. Very difficult to see her skin around her shoulder with the density of her feathers and fluff. She seems to be a little better today. Standing more. Holding her leg up but putting it down to hobble instead of using her wing.
