What is the danger of dipping a chickens leg in gas for leg mites? I see info of lots who do it and it works really well in one treatment and then you see a lot saying to never do it but they dont really leave a great explanation as to why? I want them gone lol I have done the vasoline, but with 12 birds, I cant keep treating them all the time and it always comes back.

sorry haven't used any chemicals, only had them because i rescued a chook that had them and she passed it onto 2 of my girls and my roo :( lesson learned.
In the past i used an old plastic ice-cream container filled with olive oil and neem oil 4:1, it worked a treat, that was when i had 10 chooks. when i locked them up at night, they are sleepy and i would grab each one and dunk their legs and then put them back on their perch, i would do them all but only 4 had them. i did it for 3 nights in a row, then every 2nd or 3rd day, then every 4 or 5 days until they cleared up. The oil would end up covering their perches plus their coop would get a spray down with hot water with neem oil mixed in. Kept the buggers away. the oil also protects the wooded coop.
hope this helps

Have you tried this? Cleared up my birds lice in 24 hours.

Can you post some photos of the birds and legs?

Gasoline is toxic, but quite a few people do use it for treatment of SLM. You would dip the legs, then apply an ointment like A+D. SLM is not a "quick fix" all treatments require at least one "repeat application" that includes the gasoline method.

Vaseline does work, but you will need to apply it to the legs of your flock at least a couple of times a week. Easiest done when the birds are all roosting at night, you can grab them then.

You mention the SLM keeps coming back - you need to be persistent and stick with your treatment plan. Housing/bedding/nesting boxes/roosting bars also need to be cleaned out and treated with a permethrin based poultry spray. While for the most part SLM do live under the scales of the legs, they do move around, so getting rid of them in housing is another important step.

You can use gas. Then apply the ointment Wyorp Rock recommended. You'll have to treat roosts and I recommend Nu-Stock for treating the roosts, a thin coat on roosts is all that is needed. You can use it on the legs and feet of your chickens as well if you decide not to use gas. Wear disposable gloves when applying it.
