Leg mites

I have read several threads here on leg mites that have had great info on how to treat them, but I am wondering how to tell when chickens have them. I have seen pictures of advanced infestations but I am wondering how to tell early on if my chickens have them. I have never had chickens before so I don't know what to look for. Any info would be great!

my chickens' legs looked "dirty" around each scale even whren I cleaned their legs,the scales will look a tiny bit raised.legs look redder and like dry skin sort of-but they are looking really good now for the most part.It takes a long time to get rid of.I treat every bird like they have it-not just the obvious ones
