Leg scales dry flaky, can't find mites, something else?

GREAT INFO everyone. Thanks.
I wonder if a home pump spritzer spray bottle would work?

Now I must make sure when I oil their legs after dark and put them back on the roost, they don't slide off otherwise they'll think I'm a jerk. :p
My chickens must think I'm a jerk...:lau They're roosts are slippery now.

I put olive oil in a pump spray bottle but the oil is too thick...lol. Perhaps if the oil is a thinner oil it could work?:thumbsup

Is there anything you do differently for feather footed chickens? I just gave my entire flock the soapy water/scrub/oil treatment. But when I got to my blue Cochin I was a little stumped as to what to do with her legs & the oil.
I have Silkies and some leg feathers show up on others. I've trimmed the feathers on the purebreds because the feathers are a pain and in the way. I like to see what shape the legs are in.

I just sprayed the flock the other night and I sprayed the legs with the feathers on. I prefer clean legs on the chickens so I'm breeding away from feathers on the legs. For right now this is how I do it. :)

Almond oil is pretty good for this, not too thick not too thin. The only issue is it's delicious not a big deal for chickens without feather legs but feather legged ones really, really enjoy preening those feet.Upside it does great in a spray bottle. Just make sure it's almond oil for cooking and not sweet almond oil sweet almond is toxic I'm pretty sure.

Tasty AND a mite killer. That's a win-win. :woot

I wonder what mine think of my olive oil. I'm using olive oil because it's gone bad...and at least this way I can still get usage out of it...lol.
My chickies probably taste my bad oil and want to spit it out.

I had a laugh, before my silly internet dropped a bit earlier, I had already wiped down the my fixed roost with the only oil at hand that was not toxic to the girls laying....yep coconut oil.
So we both have coconut fragrant chickens.

But is there a reason some chooks get flacky scales NOT to do with mites?

This new BYC format makes searching historical info and threads harder...I used to find soooo much OT stuff and indirect info. No mas.:(

Me too, can't find SQUAT anymore, there really ISN'T a search tool on this new site, not sure why but there just isn't. It's very discouraging, I like upgrades and I've given this site the benefit of the doubt but it is nowhere near as good as the old one. But it's free and still awesome to be able to ask for help, however you can't find old info, maybe it's designed that way on purpose? To involve lurkers instead of letting them just thumb thru old posts?
