Leg twitching anyone???

S'il vous plait, le Canard de Barberie (or perhaps we have un canard sauvage on our hands here?),

I beg to differ. Many of the posters are quite well read as regards to ducks and their care. They also have many years of invaluable hands-on experience in the field, so to speak, that is often far more pertinent than textbook knowledge.

In my six short weeks of raising adopted ducklings, I have found an incredible wealth of information on this board. And my ducklings are thriving. Anecdotal evidence, to be certain. But then so is your claim of many lives lost.

With such clear disregard for the information posted, why do you still lurk here?

Only here do I read that corn is a hot food, that creates an exothermic reation in the gut as it is being digested. What crap!!!!

The advice given here has killed many, many a duck. You just haven't been around that long to see it.

You make me lol... LOL

You might want to take a chemistry lesson on metabolism. There are both exothermic and endothermic processes.
For example, glycerol -> glycerol phosphate is endothermic, but glycerol + ATP -> glycerol phosphate + ADP is exothermic

For the purpose of this thread though.

Corn only has a protein content of 8%, which isn't enough for ducks.

The reason it may be considered a "hot" food is because it's so high in metobolic energy, the energy is released faster and thus able to be used faster. Think simple sugars.

If I am to understand correctly, corn builds fat and is deficient in many vitamins. Therefore, in my humble opinion, having Mandarins and Muscovies, a straight corn or mostly corn diet is not good for general use and especially not good during mating season. What I believe, corn being referred to as a "hot" food, means that it builds fat in the ducks so they can winter better in cold climates.
Whether it is an "old wives tale" or not, I will not feed a mostly corn diet to my ducks. I still believe that "chicken soup" is good for you when you are sick! Some truth to that old wives tale, and impossible to prove me wrong.....or right.

If you look at corn as "candy", you will give it its proper perspective in a duck's diet. It is basically just sugar and it will make your duck fat and unhealthy if they get too much.
