It's been all over in the news in Provo that a city ordinance about chickens has been passed- you can have up to 5 hens (or was it 6) as long as the coop is 15 ft away from the edge of your property, and if you register with the city for a small fee. I wonder, though, what about other fowl? Guinea fowl in particular? Would they follow the same restrictions, or would there be less or more restrictions? Thanks.

Unincorporated Salt Lake County is considering allowing chickens they meet sometime next week June 9. Your coop can be no more than 6' high and has to have hardware cloth two feet in the ground and two feet out, 50' from dwellings. You have to notify neighbors within 300'. You have to consent in writing to an on site inspection. Clean your chicken dropping once a week and yearly intensive scrub. You cannot slaughter on your property and you must get a permit for a fee. But they are considering no more than 15 chickens. I emailed them about the positive aspects to chicken raising. All of the info I got from BYC. They have hundreds of emails good and bad. I hope they allow us to have chickens. Wish us Good Luck here is slcounty. CK

I live In Sandy UT and, while the gov't is at least looking at the chicken issue, they have gone overboard. To dictate the materials, the dimensions, the building, the cleaning, etc. is overkill. We are not 6th graders working on a science project (my apologies to 6th graders). And we are talking about less than 15 chickens. Most urban chicken people go above and beyond in making sure that they are not noticeable by smell, noise (roosters) or anything else that might get them in trouble. Technically, if I didn't live where I do, I wouldn't comply cause my coop is 7' tall and I used chickenwire stapled onto RR ties set at groundlevel. It is very clean, the 4 hens are relatively quiet and my neighbors are fine with it. Even in Sandy, I am not totally legal.

The neighbors 300' away didn't ask me if it was ok for their dogs to bark all nite or poop in my yard.

So I'm not asking permission.

I do not look at it as permission. They said notify. You could notify by person, sending them a letter or leaving a not on their door. They have not said how to notify. I could email them! yes that is what I will do. and my coop is off the ground so how is metal cloth buired in the gronud going to help me. Also my cat is not lisenced. I am a total rebel

Tell them you'll notify them by telepathic thoughts and then get distracted.

No wait, then the thought police would want in. I didn't notify anyone but my immediate neighbors.
