Just curious, why an auto-sexing bird like the legbar wouldnt be more popular in the US. with the popularity of sex-links, etc. seems like youd see more auto-sexing chickens. especially after seeing all the "is this a roo?" threads on here. its always so sad to hear how dreaded people are to find out they have a rooster, i know most people live in less than rural conditions.

The main popularity with Sex Links isn't entirely the fact that they are easily sexed (and sadly still a lot of people are confused on the sex of them. . .) It is that the hens will lay a LOT of eggs. . . For their first year.

Legbars are simply just not available to the US.

As for autosexing, not sure on why. . .

well i understand and am aware that sex-links are hands down some of the best layers there are, period. secondly, it takes only a quick glance to google to find out how to distinguish a sex-links' sex. and finally, the legbar was bred from araucanas, barred rocks, and leghorns. so i'd imagine they are pretty darn good layers. and like i hear so much on this site "hatcheries breed for egg production" - so i assume egg production is just something you can just cull your way towards. just seems like a lot of work to make a hybrid sex link when theres a readily available auto-sex breed out there already - and bred from such staple breeds here in the usa.

oh... and did i say i think theyre really cool looking? haha.. especially the crele color roo's.

but anyways, does anyone know of anyone breeding them in the states? my dad has a chicken book he got from Lowe's of all places - turns out its geared towards the UK. so it talks about Ixworths, and sussex, and legbars quite a bit. they have some pretty cool breeds over there. they probably say the same thing about us though.... naa

haha that'll be pretty sweet. yeah, ive read about the "1000 dollars per bird" rule to get 'em over here. thats pretty awesome that greenfire does all that though. those coronation sussex sure are beautiful.

They are popular with me. And the fact that Punnet developed them provides extra geek points.

I have ONE. Hope to hatch more soon.

I have 2on the way. Fingers crossed the move doesn't stress them out too much. I am Sooo excited.

I think they will become more and more common in the next 6-12 months. Mypetchicken.com will start selling them in early 2013.

Found someone selling hatching eggs on ebay. I'm tempted. But I have eggs arriving tomorrow so the incubator will be busy.
