This is my first time ever having brown leghorn chickens. My friend gave me a dozen fertile eggs that I hatched out in my incubator. My question is, my chicks are right at two months old. I was told that the ones that have a lot more black darker color to them are going to be roosters and all of the lighter ones are going to be hens! I was also told that it’s really easy to tell at a week old because roosters just have a little fuzzy puff for a tail, and the hens have already started developing tails. Just curious because I have one I know is a rooster because his comb and waddle is already red and he’s dark in color, but I have some that are kind of dark in color but their combs are pale so I’m just not sure. anybody have any input to help me out? I hate to take pictures and say rooster or hen because so many people get frustrated at that. Thanks in advance for the education. The picture on the left is the one I’m questioning the one on the right is very easy to tell he’s a little roo! Most of the ones that I know our hands or lighter in color than the one in the first photo. Thanks again.

Pullet and a Cockrel
I was pretty sure that’s what I had there, but the picture with the Cockrell has another little chick down below in the corner that is really dark in color but has no comb at all. Would you say that was a Rooster or pullet? What has me confused is this one particular rooster is so defined in his comb and waddle. But the other ones have a comb not as big as his and are pale in color. feathers are dark in color. but they have no wattle! that’s why I’m so confused because one is so developed and the others aren’t. I sure appreciate all your input because I’ve just never had this type of chicken.

I have never had brown leghorns so no experience at all with them. But how certain are you that both the mother and father of those chickens were brown leghorns? That cockerel especially does not match the colors I see in photos of brown leghorns. To me that looks like they could be crosses with brown leghorns and something else.

I'd trust the combs and wattles and other signs of sex such as leg thickness and posture more than colors of feathers.

The first one is a pullet. The second one is a cockerel as you know. The one in the corner is a pullet.
They look pure to me and comb size and color is a good hint but not all boys get big combs as quickly.
With brown leghorns feather color pattern is the most fool proof because the sexes have different adult patterns. After 3 weeks or so check the breast area. Males will have black or mostly black breasts. Females will have reddish or mostly reddish breasts.

Thank you so much for this info and your response! This is pretty much what I read but wanted to trust someone one here because I knew at least one person on here would have some of them. I just love this side it’s always so full of info that I knew but I always learn more as well.

Sorry, I have been dealing with multiple trees down from Hurricane Beryl at my sons in South Tx! No power for a week and has been a big mess. Thank God for generators anyway yes I know for a fact they’re pure because that’s all she has. She did tell me cockroaches are darker they will get a little bit different coloration to them, but will still have the dark in them as they get older. Thanks for your response.
