Around 11:00 this am one of our leghors who was mounted for the first time last weekend gave us our first egg. She was going back into the roost and kept looking upward ,so my husband caught her and put her in the nest box from the access door. (I told him it was so private that the girls will not be able to find it). She stayed a while, all the time making noises and knocking the golf balls around. We sat outside and when she came out we went and opened the door and a beautiful perfect egg. My dh and I were so excited and I had taken the day off today to get ready for a yard sale. What perfect timing. Mother and egg are doing well ! Do you think she will show the other girls where to find the next boxes? Shewill be 18 weeks tomorrow.

Congratulation!
That first egg is always such a delight!
I would think the others will learn from her. Especially if she's noisy and proud.

Congrats!!!

I just got my first egg the other day! ISN'T IT SO EXCITING?!!

congrats! I am in the process of getting first eggs myself and I know how exciting it is!... some of my girls have been laying for 3 weeks now, but I just got my first two orpington eggs today!

It's pretty good that you figured out exactly when she was going to lay. It was a total mystery to me... some of my girls acted like they were about to lay for weeks, but no eggs. Then , out of nowhere one day, there was a little blue-green egg in a nest... total surprise. I guess you guys have good chicken instincts!

Very exciting! I don't know about finding the nest... of my girls that are laying, all but one just decided on their own to use the nests. The one that doesn't just lays her egg on the floor everyday and we can't seem to change her. My dad, however, thinks that your one pullet will show the other girls the ropes, so hopefully that will be the case.

It is exciting ! DH made the comment while we were waiting that it must be what it is like having a baby. We never had children so it is pretty close to us. It is such a miracle when you really think about it........People who don't take the time to enjoy the natural things in life have no idea what they are missing !

We have what we think is a cuckoo maran and is quite old, this years hatch tho, but still hasnt laid. I have heard they are late developers, does this effect their egg laying?

You should probably post your own thread on that so as not to hijack this one. But as a quick answer... I have cuckoo marans and they both started laying at 20 weeks, which is on the early side of normal. They were not slow developers and were some of my first chickens to lay.
