Hi ~

Second visit today - I have 2 Leghorns (first flock) and I am pretty sure they are pullets, this one is bigger than my other one, and the comb is bigger. She is 6 weeks old, and there is a slight hint of pink at the base of her comb - the comb on her is bigger than the other pullet.

She is my fave so I hope she really is a "she" - opinions please? Also - are they typically pretty large? Both my Leghorns are much bigger than the buffs of the same age.

Thanks so much!

, just saw your pics and said "Wow! Is that Biscuit? That looks just like her, except she has a bigger comb is and her tail is bigger!" Biscuit is our 12 week old Leghorn pullet, and your two look very pullet-ish to me (still might be a bit early, though). The pullets' tails, when they hold them up, will form a V. The cockerel tail looks different.

We really like our Leghorn too. Very outgoing and curious and fast and friendly and extremely food driven! And likes to fly!

Biscuit was supposed to be a Delaware, and all my other pullets are larger dual purpose breeds, so while she may have been taller, she has always been lighter/slimmer than the others, including the Buff Orp. Could yours be crosses or maybe something like a white rock? I am certainly no expert on breeds. I will say that ours (from very early) always holds her tail straight up, and this seems characteristic of the breed.

Fingers crossed!

I would say yours are girls!!! I am sitting here with my son on my lap and he said "That looks like Maybelle and Melody!" Two of ours hold their tails like yours (down) while two of ours have tails that go straight up. Ours are either Tetra Tint or White Leghorn - but definitely girls...my son asked me to share a picture of him with his favorite chickens, Max and Maybelle....

They look like pullets to me.

It is kind of weird that they'd be bigger than your others--perhaps you meant taller, but lighter? Leghorns are a really light breed. They mature quickly, so maybe that's what you're seeing? Compared to a Rock, or an Orpington, they should be far less "meaty."
