Leghorn Gone Broody?????

I have a some white leghorn hens that were supplying me an egg a day for the last few months and now it just stopped kind of all at the same time. But at the same time it slowed down, one girl wont come out of her nest box, its been over a week. another one did it to but she jumped down when i came in today bc there very flighty and nothing was under her, and then she went back up in the box and is still there to. do they lay on nothing and think they have eggs under? as well as how often has a leghorn gone the whole 21 days in the broody state??? thanks

The first one is probably broody. But as rare as it is for a leghorn to go broody, its probably even rarer for them to sit the 21 days.

figured so, actaully in the midst of finding them homes, do chickens stop laying eggs for a while or something because i went from and egg a day to nothing for a week now???

Could be the heat - mine have slowed down a bit from around a doz eggs per day back in the spring to around 7-10 now - not a HUGE drop, but a definate slow down.

These hens obviously don't read the operational manual. I have 2 broody leghorn hens. I think these were the same 2 that went broody last year. They are devoted mothers and both of mine stay on the nest until the chicks hatch, in fact one of them is doing her second e weeks because another hen squashed all of her eggs a few days before they were to hatch. I didn't have the heart to break her up,so I gave her more eggs and I'm keeping a close watch on her.

i sure hope mine stays broody, but i hope more that the eggs are fertile

My grandmother says that her mother bought a bunch of White Leghorns one time, and one of them turned out to be the best broody she'd ever had. It may be rare for them to go broody, but it's not totally unheard of.
