Hi all,

Hoping you can help me. This white hen is 18 weeks old (is she still a pullet or a hen? Not sure when that changes) and I was told that the eggs we incubated at school came from a farm that has Red Cross and Leghorn. She was a yellow chick; the other two were brownish. As she matured and became lighter, I assumed she was a Leghorn. BUT, a few days ago, we started getting some eggs. All brown. Then, I was remembering that the egg she hatched from was brown, as well. I went back to the photos of them hatching to confirm. And it was a lighter brown. Maybe lighter than the other two eggs. But NOT white. Someone here pointed out that she has red earlobes and can't be Leghorn. Can she be a mix then? Would her mom have to have been Red Cross (Or something else) and her dad the Leghorn to get the brown egg she hatched from? Is that how it works? Thanks in advance for any input you might have!

That is normal, if you mix white chickens with brown egg laying chickens you get mostly white hens laying brown eggs, from my limited experience in breeding chickens I think white is dominant color for feathers and brown is dominant color for eggs.

Whoops I forgot to add her picture to reference - here is our Blueberry.

I think you are mixing up Longhorn (which is a cow) with Leghorn (which is a chicken). She is probably a mix with a Plymouth rock (and leghorn) and the rock genes won out on egg color. she does have that "leghorn" look to her with that high prominent comb. You have some pretty birds there! Good Luck! :hugs

Hahaha thank you for saying that so kindly! I definitely USUALLY know the difference between the two names HAHA but I had a little brain-poof it seems. :thI'm going to see if I can change that title LOL so nobody thinks I'm looking for a cattle ID! :gig I will have to look up the Plymouth Rock and see .. thank you for the suggestion. :love
