Leghorn Thread

Hey everyone,

I have only ever owned two Leghorns. Both white. I lost one in May to egg binding, and the other is now on the way out with the same thing. I recieved them from Meyer Hatchery three years ago. Both were GREAT birds. Very friendly, great layers, got along great with my whole flock. And then just like that, one became egg bound. No matter what I tried, her health deteriorated until she passed. Now two months later, my other Leghorn is going through the exact same thing....

Is this to be expected with leghorns? I'm trying to figure out if it is the breed, or if there is something going on with my flock. I'm so bummed about losing them. They were the heart of the flock.

So far I have had no problems with my Leghorns. My Whites are 4 years old and still laying great. They were given to me when they were 3 months old. I don't know where they originally came from except the people who gave them to me knew I raised chickens and they couldn't take care of them anymore. I have both white and brown.

@MsChickenMomma In my experience the high production hatchery white Leghorns are much more likely to randomly keel over. Not that you can't have super healthy ones.. Just that the odds are against you.

My other leghorn colors have all been great.

Those production white ones though, do lay the best.

My Brown Leghorns are still to young to lay but I hope they lay as well as my whites do.

My rose comb dark browns lay very well, good and steady. However, the whites do lay a bit more and larger eggs.

I hope mine lay well. I have had a hard time finding Brown Leghorns. I would like some Rose Comb Brown Leghorns. Do you have a suggestion of where I might be able to get some. Do you have any males of any of the White or Brown Leghorns? Just curious. I only have white males.

I have zero white males, I have one dark brown rose comb male.

I have female:
White production single comb
Rose comb white
Rose comb dark brown
Single comb dark brown

I had a single comb black I just got rid of.


I got my start from shipped eggs off of the Facebook Leghorn sites.

Have you had pretty good luck with the shipped eggs? I have Single Comb and Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds as well as SC and RC Rhode Island Whites too. Anxiously awaiting for the Brown Leghorns to start laying. I only have a white male. Have you mated your brown male to any of the white females?

Any color over white will produce white with a few spots. I like the look.

The white I have is dominant. Rose comb is also dominant.

As to shipped eggs... Meh... You have to like gambling. I have gotten 8 out of 9, as well as 0 out of 12, and everything in between.

I don't ship eggs, I prefer to hatch and sell chicks.

What do you think my White Leghorn male will produce with my Brown females? I do ship my RIR and RIW eggs. I pack them very carefully in foam and so far have had pretty good luck with them. Not all will hatch but quite a few will.
