LEGHORNS! Tell me about them.

I have a California White, Perdita, and she doesn't like to be held but she will jump in my lap. I also have a Red Leghorn, Juliet, and she seems a lot more skittish. They are both 22.5 weeks old and Perdita has been laying regularly for a week! She's my second-best layer. Believe it or not, the best layer is Fawkes, my Red-Shouldered Yokohama. She has laid an egg every day save one!! Juliet hasn't started yet.

I have 21 white leghorns and 9 NH reds...2 of my leghorns can be pretty friendly with one that will jump up on my leg, chatting away while i'm sitting and feeding snacks. The rest are flighty and keep away from me.Their just starting to lay in the last week, so can't comment on production as of yet...
Half my NH Reds are just as afraid of me as the leghorns..! A few of my NH Reds are pretty friendly...I got the lehorns because i wanted productive egg layer on as little feed as needed, there noted for that. I really don't care if there friendly or act like there running for ther lives when they see me...i have enough friends...

i wanted good egg production to feed ratio, and i think they wil pan out once they get going and are laying well..all in all,i like them, there just they way they are, flighty and spooky...Kevin

I have to say my white leghorns are the friendliest of my bunch. They're not lapdogs but are curious and very social. We also have 2 Danish Brown Leghorns who will take treats with the rest but are not as friendly as the whites.

My WLs are the friendliest, most curious and are more in tune with me then my other breeds. They are always the first to greet me and will follow me around the yard and want my attention. Granted I only have one cockerel and one hen left due to a few deaths this summer. The hen knows her name I swear. The cockerel is the craziest, most nosy chicken I have. He will come running to me if I call to him and he is across the yard. Dh says he has a crush on me.

At night I will talk to all of my chickens and pat them. Sometimes the barred rocks will peck at me and my WL hen will peck them after they peck me. It's almost like she is putting them in place for pecking me. Strange I know, but it's happened many times.
I am almost thinking of getting more WL this spring from the feed store or eggs to hatch from the guy I got these guys from.
They certainly are the more entertaining and have an appreciation for me more then my other breeds.

As a child we lived in Jackson, New Jersey and at that time it was mostly poultry farms. All the farms had White Leghorns for egg production. The winter in NJ might not be as bad as where you are, but it was cold.
Just thought I would add my two cents

BTW, they had lights on for 14 hours a day.
