are white leghorns as flighty as people say or can I keep them free range

They can be flighty, but it's not that bad. If you are afraid of flying out of their enclosure, just clip their wing feathers. They do love free-ranging! My leghorns are always inside a huge fenced-in pasture, so I don't know if could live without fences or not? Good luck!

Flighty doesn't mean they'll fly away. It means they are more apt to get nervous, they are less complacent, which makes them very good free rangers as they keep an eye out for danger. i have brown leghorns, and they don't like to be touched but they will come when called. Some breeds are better at evading predators than others, and leghorns are said to be one such breed, which is why I chose them for my flock.

I had some brown leghorns on .7 acres with a 4 ft tall fence, (3 ft 2x4 wire with two strands wire on top, total 4 ft). a few "ventures" mainly due to the andalusians' bad influence when they were young,but settled right down. I sold them due to my move, and the new home has similar fence height with much less space. That causes problems when they happen to "startle". She also has white leghorns, which for some reason are very calm by comparison. So it depends on individuals, you have to get past the puberty stage somehow, and on the amount of range space as well as fence height/type.
