x2 on what GaryDean said. The big floppy combs they have may get frostbite. They are wonderful chickens, I have 25 of them, but I live in sunny California, so..

is there something i should do to keep there combs so they don't get frostbite? i heard you spread some kind of gel. thanks

Welcome to BYC! Like other Mediterranean breeds, Leghorns are not cold hardy as chickens go. If you are wanting excellent layers for very cold, dark winters, you would be better off with Black Sex Links or Black Australorps. I have had all three varieties (sex links are hybrids, not breeds), and where winters are long and cold, Sex Links and Australorps will outlay Leghorns and are a better choice.
