Leghorns

Welcome to BYC. Leghorns can be flighty, but they make up for that with their egg production and sheer beauty. Yep, they are my favorite breed.

I think so many people hate flighty chickens because they enjoy picking up and handling their chickens (at least occassionally). When Leghorns are handled, they frequently flap like crazy in an effort to get away from their handler, and scream bloody murder (mine always did), and sometimes even injure themselves in an attempt to escape being held. Of course there are a few exceptions to this, and while Leghorns can be trained (at least to some degree) not to respond to handling in this high strung manner, they do not come by it naturally like Orpingtons, Australorps, Brahmas, Cochins, Faverolles, and other breeds that have a reputation for being calm and gentle. It usually takes lots of time and effort to train Leghorns not to be afraid of being held. Flighty breeds are especially a problem for chicken owners who have smaller children that like to hold and pet the chickens (and make pets of them). Only those chicken owners who have no real desire to handle their birds except when absolutely necessary, or who don't mind the noisy and frenetic attempts to escape when they do handle their Leghorns, or who do not have children who want to make pets of the chickens, can really appreciate the beauty and productivity of Leghorns.

IDK but I raised a Brown leghorn with a Australorp and mine wasn't that wild as what others were saying I mean when your trying to catch it yeah its hard but when I hold it and make it stand on a fence and pet it it just stands there and don't scream or do anything and I barley see them and my little cousin always chase them. But yeah I love leghorn because there so flighty and that's what makes them a beauty in my eyes. Also flighty chickens are just so fun to look at when they fly out in the morning to feed or to roost.

Maybe people should consider raising them with a fat breed so they will stick with them because my leghorn always stick with that australorp I got along with it and everywhere they go they go together and when catching it its really easy because when I can't catch it I grab the fat chicken and put it on the fence then chase the leghorn then it fly's up there then I can finally grab it.

I hear you and obviously a lot of chicken owners agree with you or they wouldn't own Leghorns. I was just answering your question about why a lot of other owners don't want flighty chickens. That's really the beauty of chickens isn't it. There are hundreds of breeds to choose from to meet each person's own personal choices about what kind of characteristics they want in a chicken.
