Leonard Coops?

Hi! So I actually did order 8x10’ custom coop from Leonard! I’ll attach pics soon, once delivered! On their blueprint, I added one extra window and moved chicken door. Also got ridge vent with a metal roof and they even offered paint colors to match our existing structures. Excited for my girls (and 1 roo) to get their new home before winter! 😄

As promised here are some photos of Leonard 8x10 pre- built coop. I’ve done several custom adjustments including moving chicken door to left side, added extra window, and since they couldn’t move perches I’m ripping those out and placing at back of coop. I’m designing a ‘poop tray’ out of clear 1mil plastic and 1x4s with a removable ‘gurney’ system for under perches. Beginning of attached 10x10 pen started we’re doing ourselves out of treated 2x4s, clear roofing, 1/2” hardwire cloth, 1x4s and 2x2s for perches. Will send more pix soon!

Nice!

Are the soffits open for ventilation?
Hi! Thanks! There’s a ridge vent in roof. Soffits don’t open. All 4 windows open; 3 coop windows lined with 1/2” hardwire cloth. The front of shed is my 3x8 feed/storage room with 1 window on right; back is 7x8 coop area. Im doing custom adjustments, added rafter to hang feeder. Caulked all around flooring and did waterproof primer in feed room as it was left unlined (inside coop is vinyl linoleum flooring). Going to use sand inside poop tray and pine shavings inside coop. I also lowered perches when we moved them to back so lowest perch is 18” off floor. One of my older Cochin hens has arthritis and she appreciates being able to hop up easier. :)

Can you leave windows open 24/7 without rain/snow getting in?

Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Since we’re building a covered pen with clear roof panels, on left side of coop yes I can leave those 2 windows open 24/7 if needed. Two windows off right side are covered by roof awning so chance precipitation could blow inside. The nestboxes are located below right back window; I’m waterproofing top of boxes & sewing upholstery curtains for windows to prevent moisture from blowing in but can still get ventilation. We are considering adding gable vents in spring. I have a fan for circulation as well as a heater. I’m retired poultry microbiologist, formerly USDA researcher. We live in piedmont area of NC, USA. Weather is unpredictable, last 2 winters mild, 3 years back over 18” snow which challenged my old coop. don’t think you can add details to account unless upgrade by paying monthly fees. 😉

My experience here in the Sandhills is that in our brutal summers I have to have either DEEP shade or at least double, maybe triple the recommended 1 square foot per bird to keep the temperatures under 100F once it gets over 90F. :)

coop and run look great!

i see a good spot for ventilation up under the peak of the roof, in these triangular areas. i think this picture is looking at the back wall but if you do them front and back you’ll get a nice cross-vent effect. cut them out and replace with HC and you’ll have a good bit more ventilation up high where you want it
