Last year I bought a Gypsy Gripper and I love it. It allows me to cut the full length of my ruler without having to reposition my hands, and of course, it protects me from accidentally cutting off one of my fingers, LOL.

The Gypsy Grippers are rather pricey, ranging from 19.99 upwards.
If you want to save a few bucks, a similar gripper is available at Fry's Electronics or at Bed Bath and Beyond for only $12.99. It can probably also be found at discount stores that carry "As Seen On TV" type items.

Here is what it looks like:

My mom also wants to get one to use as a safety grip in her shower.

Hey, that's cool! I could definitely use one of those for the longer ruler.... I'll wait for my next Bed Bath & Beyond coupon and go pick one up! Thanks...

My mom has one of those in the bathtub and the shower so she ahs something to hang onto in case she starts to fall.
