Less, possibly no more, of a skunk problem.

***Warning, this post includes an unhappy ending if you are a skunk or a skunk lover. Stop reading now if this makes you uneasy.***

Thanks to those of you who responded to my last post, my skunk problem is a bit less of a problem. Last night I had my 10yo bait a spring loaded cage trap with a slice of zucchini smeared with peanut butter. (Found the trap on sale at Menards for $17.99 this week FYI).

When I came home from work this morning, I had a captured skunk outside of my coop. As I stepped out back to check it out, I saw a skunk walking up to the outside of the cage in the light of day. Decision time!! I hadn't planned on seeing this and figured I'd have to trap the buggers one at a time for a few nights. I quickly ran inside and grabbed the .22 and some hollow points, returned outside and approached from behind a tree.

"Holy chickens, there are THREE skunks outside--an adult and two babies."

I was able to kill all three with very minimal smell. Then I approached the trap and found two more younguns inside. I covered the trap with an old towel and carried it to the edge of my yard abutting a bean field. There I opened the trap and shot these as they ventured out. After I buried all five, I called it a day, but I plan to set the trap for a couple more nights in case there are more under the coop.

Two observations: 1. I was pretty nervoius about carrying the skunks in the cage with my hands, but it went well just as I had googled about others' experience. 2. The smell of these wasn't the typical skunk smell that I find almost appealing as an imported beer lover. The smell from these was comparable to a VERY hot garlic smell, IMHO.

Anyway, I wanted to post not to be gruesome, but to offer what I found to be a solution to a pest/predator problem. Hope you all don't mind me 'giving back' a little to this most helpful site.

If there were babies, you might've gotten all of them already...But I'd keep the trap set anyways.

Skunks are one of my totem animals and I've never had a problem with them...When I was trying to catch the raccoon that killed Tom, I actually caught a baby skunk...He didn't try and spray. He was curled up in a ball sleeping.

But I had to remove him before the trapper came for the trap. I basically picked up the trap and shook him out. LOL not the best way to wake up, but he yawned and stretched and toddled off.

I've even had to fairly friendly skunks in my yard BC, before chickens. One was regular skunk coloured and the other was all white except for a black spot on her head and one on her back.

If I found that either Fluffy or Stinky were after my birds, I certainly would have trapped them.

skunks will go after the eggs more often than chickens. rotten eggs will draw them like flys to dead meat. if an egg goes bad in a nest and you live within five miles of a skunk, he will find your yard. I hadn't seen a shunk in over a year, until we threw some infertal eggs down the cayon. that night it was like a skunk reunion. haven't thrown any eggs since then and haven't seen any skunks either.

A whole lot more than a lil' stinker!

As I understand it, skunks only stink with that strong skunk odor when they have sprayed it, intentionally, from their scent glands (or when their scent gland is ruptured by being run over by a car, of course). I don't know if young or baby skunks are even capable of releasing that smell yet- it might be something linked to their maturation.

I think what you smelled on the skunks was their natural musky-animal body odor. They are members of the "weasels" family and all weasels have strong body odors. Even pet ferrets can be a bit stinky, sometimes.

I have ferrets at work and they have been descented, but they still stink LOL
Even Fluffy and Stinky stunk.

According to some Native Wisdom we have 8. The 4 directions, sky and earth and 2 "Walk by Sides". They're most likely to show up when you need guidance.
Some totems change as to when they're needed.
When I'm really stressed out, my totem Charger, a Jet Black American Bison comes and we go out for a run. He hasn't been by since I've had chickens...hmmm...
