Let Me Introduce Myself

Hello and thanks for the welcome. I don't think I have an impulsive purchasing problem. I know it probably looks like that from my story. Actually, I wanted Amerucanas from the beginning and Ideal didn't have any. So I talked to the lady at Ideal and she cut me a deal on the leghorns and black sex link. She says they were a really good place to start. I think the leghorns weren't what we were wanting because they aren't as friendly and interactive with us as we wanted. The Light Brahma has turned out to be very friendly and likeable. The gold sex link and rhode island red have also turned out pretty nice. The barred rocks have really taken to my wife and are her favorites to this point. Now that we have the Amerucanas, which I really like already, we won't be getting any more chickens for a good while. We have some other varieties to see what we think of them and to see if we would be interested in having those again in the future. It really has been fun getting started and now we will grow our flock and develop the knowledge base for taking care of them... Thanks again for the post.

Thank you for the welcome! To set your mind at ease, we have the ducks in their own enclosure separate from all of the chickens. Unless they harm each other, there won't be any from them. I have already started a likes and dislikes list. I don't really like the leghorns because they are too flighty and not friendly. I am hoping they make up for that in egg production though. I like the Brahmas but suspect some of them are bullies. I haven't been able to confirm that yet. We really like the gold sex link but the black ones haven't really been good or bad. I already like the Amerucanas, Silver Laced Wyndotte, and Faverolle. They just have a nice temperament from what I have seen so far. And I am really impressed with the size and growth of the Black Jersey Giants. I suspect they are going to be huge and I think that is a cool conversation piece. I know it sounds like its all about me but really I guess it is. I don't think the chickens care much?

welcome to byc, just joined myself. you need to try a few diffrent breeds and i doubt all the chicks make it anyways. i havee BCM marans, americanas and some annoying golden seabrights. seabrights came as a christmas gift and all but 2 are roosters.

Hi MonTX. Wow... 56 chickens! That harkens me back to the story my GMa used to tell us when one year she ordered 50 chicks from Sears Roebuck, during the depression. (Yep, Sears used to sell chickens.) They sent her 50+ day-old chicks the first week of March, then another 50+ day old chicks the next week, and another 50+ chicks the week after that and another 50+ chicks the next week! By the end of the month she had almost 250 baby chicks. She gave away 100 and kept the rest. That was her first flock :)

Best of luck to you. That's a whole lot of work and fun on your hands :)

Thanks for the story! When my grandfather died last year, a lot of good stories died. I wished I'd paid more attention when I was younger. He had chickens for about forty years that I know of and all of the experience that goes with that. If I could just call him now, he'd always have the answers I bet. The long distance bill though.......

I forgot to mention that they have a 210 square ft completely wire enclosed run with about half covered. They sure did like it when we turned them loose in the run!

Welcome to BYC! Wow that is a lot of chickens!! I recently had 40+ and couldn't enjoy them because it was just too much work for me alone. I have downsized my flock by half at least and am much happier now. Good luck to you!
