Hi,

I have a 10 day old Black Australorp who is very lethargic and not eating or drinking. She just goes under the heater and sleeps.

She was fine all day yesterday, I left for a few hours in the evening and when I returned she was just standing in the corner of the brooder while all the other chicks were running around. I added sav-a-chick to the water and dipped her beak in before bed but she did not seem to drink any water. This morning I bought a syringe and have been giving her some of the sav-a-chick water about every hour or so and she seems to be swallowing a few drops each time. I tried mashing up a hard boiled egg but so far she won't eat any of it. The last two times I have taken her out to give her some water she has had very watery stool. I will try to attach photos.

I have been feeding my chicks organic scratch & peck starter feed along with their herb supplement & probios since I got them over a week ago. The first day I got them I gave them sav-a-chick in their water and for a couple days after I put a splash of apple cider vinegar in their water and then the remainder of the days just plain water. I have also been putting some dandelions in the brooder the last couple of days for the chicks to peck at.

I am using a Brinsea Ecoglow Heater and the temperature in my house has been between 70 and 75 degrees.
All of the other 6 chicks seem to be doing fine and they have not been harming her.

Any suggestions on what might be wrong with this chick and what I may be able to do to help nurse her back to health?? Is trying to give her water every hour okay? Should I do it more often than that? How many drops of water should I be trying to give her?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

If you think it could be a crop problem, try feeding her a few drops of olive or vegetable oil and gently massaging the crop downwards. Repeat this every couple of hours until the crop goes down or she perks up. If she will eat then, sneak a bit of grit into the food and try giving her moistened, mashed chick crumb.

I thought the crop was empty. When I touched that area it almost felt squishy & she would open her beak

Yes, I have provided them with grit since I first recieved them. I thought her crop was empty. But when I just felt it, it kind of felt almost squishy and she would open her beak each time I would gently rub it.

Thanks for your suggestion! I will give it a try!

Can you go to a feed store right now and buy this:

If I were you I would stop all of the extras and give them only the complete poultry feed and clean fresh water only.

Yes, I can. You think she may have cocci??
No, I think she could possible have coccidiosis.
Have you ever had to treat and chicken for it in the past?

Cocci is a bacteria...different than the parasite coccidia.
;)

No, these are the first chicks I've had. & yes she seemed to be eating well up until last night.

Thanks for your advice!

Keep trying to offer her drops of water on the side of her beak.
